Maximize the opportunities of the National Solar Schools Programme funding

Through the National Solar Schools Program the simplest option for schools is to spend $50,000 on solar power. However including energy efficiency, as well as the required $20,000 on solar power, will be a better option for most schools.

Energy efficiency is an excellent financial investment. Energy efficiency projects will pay back the initial investment within 5 to 10 years, whereas solar power systems will take more than 20 years to pay back (including the benefit of the feed-in tariff). Many energy efficiency measures involve replacing old technology with new (for example replacing old lights). This provides a significant capital upgrade benefit and maintenance saving.

Example for a SA regional school:

Measures we are able to implement include but are not limited to: lighting upgrades; time control and consolidation of hot water systems; Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system improvements including time control and ceiling insulation; and rainwater system installations.
